Possible Revamped Notification System for iOS 5

With news fr iDB regarding iOS 5 starting to pick up, more speculation is being made about what Apple will do with the next iteration of iOS. A new notification system is one of the most requested features for iOS 5. The current system has been highly criticized for years.

Cult of Mac is reporting that Apple will be buying a small company to build its notification technology into iOS. Keep in mind, rumors of Apple revamping notifications have been floating around for years.

“There were rumors last year that the iPhone’s notification system would be fixed after the chief architect of Palm’s system, Rich Dellinger, returned to work at Apple. However, the system still hasn’t been fixed, and according to our source, Apple is now trying to buy a small app developer to fix it.

Our source, who asked to remain anonymous, didn’t know the identity of the company, except it already has an iPhone app in the App Store.”

Cult of Mac is placing its bet on Boxcar, which would be a definite candidate for an Apple buyout. Boxcar currently offers its own method for push notifications through its iOS app. When asked about a potential buyout, Boxcar declined to comment.

“I sent an email to App Remix’s CEO Jonathan George asking whether his company was going to be bought by Apple. His response? “No comment…” he said.”

If Apple is indeed planning on a revamp of iOS notifications, what will the new system look like? A more unobtrusive experience would be ideal. The pop-up style of the current notification system has been in need of a change for quite some time.

We’ve seen many different concepts, but this one looks the closest to something Apple would actually design.

Although it’s very unlikely that Apple will implement a system exactly like this, it’s entertaining to think of what could be coming in iOS 5. Most likely, Apple will surprise us all with a totally original and creative system that no one could have guessed.

Apple Will Fix Location Bug in iOS 4.3.3, Coming in the Next Two Weeks

        

Apple will be pushing an update to iOS in the next couple weeks that reportedly addresses the location tracking “bug” that has stormed the media. The iPhone’s location database retained too much tracking info, and Apple plans on fixing that issue in iOS 4.3.3.

A few minor bugs will be addressed, but iOS 4.3.3 looks like it will mainly focus on the iPhone’s location database.

Boy Genius Report has been told that iOS 4.3.3 will address,

• The update will no longer back up the location database to iTunes.
• The size of the location database will be reduced.
• The location database will be deleted entirely when Location Services are turned off.
• Battery life improvements.
• iPod bug fixes.

If you recall, Apple addressed what it would fix in an iOS update during the company’s Q&A on the location issue.

Sometime in the next few weeks Apple will release a free iOS software update that:

• reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone
• ceases backing up this cache
• deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.
• In the next major iOS software release the cache will also be encrypted on the iPhone.

We saw 4.3.3 coming when there was such a strong response to the uncovering of the iPhone’s location database. Although it honestly seems like a non-issue, it’s nice to see that Apple is being responsive in fixing this “bug” with a quick update.

iOS 4.3.3 seems to be a minor update, so hopefully ic0n1c’s untethered exploit will remain unpatched for jailbreakers. Apple has grown more aggressive with patching exploits as of late, so only time will tell.

Developers Report that Apple Begins Widespread Testing of iOS 5

According IDB update,say that ~ The next major iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS, is scheduled to be previewed at the WWDC conference this summer. We already heard that certain developers have seen their apps tested on the next version of iOS, and it now seems that more and more apps are getting the iOS 5 treatment.

iOS 5 is expected to deliver awesome new features and extensively tie into Apple’s rumored and upcoming cloud service. Is Apple already testing third party apps on this mysterious software?

9to5Mac thinks so. They’ve been receiving tips from develepors saying that their apps are being tested on iOS 5. According to the tips, the new OS is being tested on all iDevices (including the 3GS). This level of testing usually indicates that the next iOS version will be released in the coming months.

iOS 5 will most likely be released as a beta to develepors at WWDC this June. Perhaps iOS 5 will look something like the mysterious video that showed the white iPhone running an unrecognizable version of iOS.

It is unclear as to whether the software will officially launch alongside new hardware in the fall.

Apple Building Two iPhone 5 Models for Release This Fall

Apple is reportedly building two iPhone 5 models for a scheduled fall release.

According to an employee of an Apple part supplier, there is reason to believe that the iPhone 5 will actually be two devices: a ‘standard’ and ‘pro’ model.

Previous rumors have said that the iPhone 5 would be a significant redesign of its predecessor, and iDB also heard rumors that the iPhone 5 will end up being only a slight evolution of the iPhone 4.

Due to the extensive amount of NDAs our source had to sign to work with Apple, he could not give us very many details. He does believe that Apple is going to build two iPhone models, which he referred to as a ‘normal’ and a ‘pro’ version.

Our source says that Apple is ordering components of similar function, but some of them are the very best of what you can get right now.

While the rest of the ordered components are just the standard versions, Apple is also ordering better quality components of the same function. Our source says that both types of components wouldn’t go in one device together, which makes him believe Apple is up to something with a ‘pro’ version.

We believe our source is reliable regarding this information. On top of that, we have also heard from an inside source at Apple that the iPhone 5(s) will definitely not be released until Q2 of this year. Apple’s internal revenue forecast for the next business quarter is the lowest it’s ever been, which means no new iPhone(s) until at least August or September.

According to our inside source at Apple, the company is making plans for the next iPhone announcement in the fall after the “Back to School” season. The next iPhone announcement will take place in the exact same time frame as Apple’s music and iPod event has in the past.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about a fall iPhone announcement, and we believe our source has only helped confirm that news.

Recent rumors of an iPhone 4S have suggested that the next generation iPhone will only be a slight redesign and focus more on internal hardware. We’ve heard that the next iPhone (whether it be two devices or one) will be a global device capable of running on all carriers.

Perhaps Apple will keep the ‘normal’ version of the iPhone 5 as a carrier-specific device, and introduce a global phone with upgraded specs as the ‘pro’ version.
