Dev Team has good news regarding new iPad jailbreak

Even though the new iPad doesn’t officially go on sale until tomorrow morning, some folks have already gotten their hands on the one. It appears that some retailers started selling the tablet around midnight tonight.
Of course, now that it’s starting to make its way into customers hands, the big question here at iDB is: “when will it be jailbroken?” Luckily, the infamous Dev Team posted some interesting information tonight regarding the topic…

“There are a few bits of good news already:

  • We can confirm that the method used to jailbreak the iPad2 4 months ago still works even in 5.1. That means that we’ll at least be able to get our foot in the door to get the required kernel dumps on the ipad 3. That’s an important step, but by no means is it the end of the story.
  • Those of you following @i0n1c may have noticed he’s already tweeted pictures of his iPad 2 jailbroken at 5.1. As far as we know, he’s using a method completely unrelated to the one mentioned above. That would be great news!
  • We’ve also seen bits and pieces of an entirely different jailbreak method being investigated by someone close to the Cydia repo scene.
That’s three different angles, and we’re not even including the continuous work @pod2g makes towards a new jailbreak! As always, keep in mind this is very preliminary progress, and it’s impossible to predict how or when these things turn out.”

The post goes on to mention that it’s possible that some third-generation iPads are shipping with software prior to iOS 5.1. So make sure that when/if you plug the new tablet into your computer, that you do not upgrade the firmware!
It looks like the hackers of the jailbreak community have a pretty good bead on things. And hats off to the Dev Team for keeping us up to date and informed. Now our next question is, will Saurik update Cydia with Retina graphics?
Kidding, of course.

Dev Team Working on “Very Promising” iPhone 4S Unlock

Dev Team frontman and unlock guru MuscleNerd has given an update on a new unlock for the newly-released iPhone 4S. According to MuscleNerd, a “very promising” unlock for the new handset is “in the works.”
While iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 owners with older basebands have been able to unlock after jailbreaking for awhile now, there’s a whole set of newer basebands waiting for an UltraSn0w update.
UltraSn0w lets jailbreakers unlock the iPhone for free to use on different carriers, and there hasn’t been a baseband update for quite some time. Currently, UltraSn0w for iOS 5 supports the following basebands on the iPhone 3GS: 4.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. The 01.59.00 baseband is also supported on the iPhone 4. There are multiple iPhone 4 basebands that have yet to be unlocked with an UltraSn0w update.
The Gevey SIM hardware unlock supports the same basebands as UltraSn0w on iOS 5. You must preserve your baseband when jailbreaking (tethered or semitethered) by using either RedSn0w or Sn0wBreeze if you want to keep unlocking.
Obviously, an unlock for the iPhone 4S will require a jailbreak, and an untethered jailbreak is also in the works for iOS 5. The Chronic Dev Team gave an update late last night on the status of the iOS 5 jailbreak. Hackers are working feverishly to uncover stable exploits, and they want your help.
MuscleNerd hasn’t given an exact ETA on the UltraSn0w update, but potential unlockers with newer basebands shouldn’t be left out in the cold much longer.

Dev Team Posts Video of iPad 2 Jailbroken on iOS 5

Hot on the heels of MuscleNerd’s status update on the iPhone 4S jailbreak, a short video of the iPad 2 has surfaced showing the tablet jailbroken and running Cydia on iOS 5.
No ETA has been given for the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak, but we can only assume that a jailbreak will be released for all devices at once, meaning that you’ll be able to jailbreak A5 devices like the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as well as older generation iDevices…

Remember, the Chronic Dev Team is still working on a jailbreak, too. It’s not a race to see who finishes first, but we have to congratulate MuscleNerd and the Dev Team for making such progress.
We’ll let you know when more develops. In the meantime, don’t believe anything you see about an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak unless it’s from a trusted source.

Dev Team Talks iPhone 5 Jailbreak and New Exploits at MyGreatFest

P0sixninja and iOPK took that stage at MyGreatFest earlier days ago,to talk about the Chronic Dev Team and jailbreaking. Chronic Dev frontman Joshua Hill (p0sixninja) had some important announcements to make, including the news that the team has found a record breaking 5 new exploits for an iPhone 5 and iPad 2 jailbreak.
The Chronic Dev Team is ready to jailbreak the iPhone 5 with the new exploits that have been discovered, and the exploits already work on the iPad 2…
The exploits that the Chronic Dev Team have found can be patched by Apple in future iOS updates, as they are not hardware-level exploits. The good news about this type of exploit is that an updated bootrom in the iPhone 5 won’t compromise the jailbreak.
Since it’s a software-level exploit, the iPhone 5 running iOS 5 should be susceptible to what the Chronic Dev Team has cooking in the exploit department. Joshua himself said, “It’s a record breaking number of exploits found.” This news reflects what we’ve already heard that the Chronic Dev Team is “actively working” on jailbreaking iOS 5.
Greenpois0n, developed by the Chronic Dev Team, was originally the only tool to provide a completely untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. Key member of the Chronic Dev Team, P0d2g, has apparently found a new exploit for iDevices running the A4 processor (iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th gen, iPad 1st gen), including multiple exploits for the iPad 2 and presumably the iPhone 5.
Joshua said that the upcoming untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 will be the “most amazing jailbreak yet,” and, assumedly, the Chronic Dev Team will be able to push out an untethered jailbreak for the iOS 5 public launch. The Chronic Dev members will obviously need the iPhone 5 in their hands before they can actually test an untethered jailbreak, but a jailbreak for the iPhone 5 will most likely be released shortly after the device’s unveiling to the public.
When it comes to the Chronic Dev Team itself, Joshua noted that funding is a huge problem. The team is trying to expand, but additional funding will be needed to continue adding more hackers to the roster. At MyGreatFest, Joshua announced “Chronic Dev Team LLC.” The team is looking for more talented hackers, and bright things are definitely in store.
You can learn more about the Chronic Dev Team on the Greenpois0n website. The team’s keynote presentation from MyGreatFest is available to download for free here.

Chronic-Dev Team “Actively Working” on the iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak

As we near the public launch of iOS 5, a lot of jailbreakers in this World are wondering what the future holds. It was originally thought that Apple was out to kill jailbreaking in iOS 5, and many became even more worried when famed hacker Comex announced that he had been hired by Apple. Was the end drawing near?
We can all rest assured that jailbreaking is alive and well. And after months of there being no untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 or the last two releases of iOS 4, the Chronic-Dev Team has said that it is “actively working” on an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5…
Apple has released seven consecutive betas for iOS 5 so far (with an eighth expected to drop Friday), and each release has had an accompanying tethered jailbreak via tools like RedSn0w and Sn0wbreeze. These jailbreaks have allowed developers to already begin innovating on iOS 5 with third party widgets and other tweaks.
If you don’t know the difference between a tethered and untethered jailbreak, it essentially comes down to this: A tethered jailbreak requires you to re-jailbreak every time you reboot your iDevice, while an untethered jailbreak lasts as long as you don’t upgrade your iOS firmware. Obviously, an untethered jailbreak is the preferred option for the end user.
The art of a good untethered jailbreak is a very complex and masterful one, as hacker i0n1c’s exploit research paper has revealed. i0n1c was a key figure in the development of the iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak.
While the Dev Team and other prominent hackers, like Comex, have been responsible for the untethered jailbreaks since iOS 4.3, the Chronic-Dev Team is now actively working on an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5′s public launch.
As noted by iPhoneItalia, Chronic-Dev member pod2g has echoed the previous statement of Chronic-Dev frontman P0sixninja that jailbreak developers are working on an untethered exploit for iOS 5:

In case you didn’t know, pod2g was a key hacker behind the iOS 4.1/4.2.1 untethered jailbreak that was released with the GreenPois0n tool.
Additionally, Dev Team frontman MuscleNerd has affirmed the same news:
Comex was the last hacker to provide a widely used untethered jailbreak in the form of JailbreakMe for iOS 4.3.3. He also pioneered the first untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2. Now that he is gone from the jailbreak scene, it will be up to the rest of the Chronic-Dev and Dev Team members to keep finding exploits in iOS 5.
While no official timeframe has been given for the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak, recent reports suggest that Apple will release its final GM build of iOS 5 for public launch in two weeks. After Apple’s next announcement, the software will be released to customers. Then, depending on the results of the Chronic-Dev and Dev team’s efforts, an untethered jailbreak will be released shortly after Apple makes iOS 5 available.
Last Question; Will u upgrade to iOS5 (if) without Untethered Jailbreak???

The Infamous GeoHot Partying with Jailbreak Royalty at Defcon

Justin Williams tweeted the above picture from p0sixninja’s hotel room last night. The group was enjoying a little R&R after a heavy day of hacking at this year’s Defcon convention. The annual event highlights new exploits and popular topics in the security community.

If you’ve been jailbreaking for a while, chances are you’ll recognize a few people in the picture above. Instantly identifiable are Saurik, the mastermind behind Cydia, and the original iPhone hacker GeoHot…

Then there’s Chronic Dev team member p0sixninja, aka Joshua Hill, and Justin “Jaywalker” Williams sporting the GreenPois0n t-shirts. And if that’s not enough star power, nitoTV(known for his work on the Apple TV) is in there too.

It’s crazy to think about the effects that these guys have had on the jailbreak scene. If nothing else, this epic photograph makes you stand back and think, “Damn, there sure are a lot of rock stars in that room. I wonder what they’re talking about.”
