iPad 3 expected to be available March 16

We’re just one day away from the big event (U.S Time) and it things that new information is leaking by the minute. Yesterday, we heard from a reliable source that the iPad 3 might indeed be LTE capable. Today 9to5Mac reports on the availability of the iPad 3.

According to sources who have presumably be reliable in the past, 9to5Mac claims that the iPad 3 will be available in store on March 16, which falls on a Friday, a day that Apple has historically favored when launching new products…

We’ve been told by a Apple Store source who has been reliable in the past that preparations are being made for a big Apple Store event which will culminate on Friday, March 16th. Naturally, this points to an iPad 3 launch on the Friday just nine days after tomorrow’s announcement. We’ve previously noted that an Apple Store in London at the world famous Harrod’s will open on that date as well as a new Store in Houston, Texas.

Of course, until it is confirmed by Apple, these are just rumors. We’ll find out for sure tomorrow what the future holds for the iPad 3. In the meantime, make sure to read our post about what to expect from tomorrow’s iPad 3 event.

Rumors: iPhone 5 to have glass back panel too

The folks over at iLounge seem to be on a roll today. Earlier we told you about the site’s report that Apple was working on some kind of “enhanced Smart Cover” for the iPad 3, and now it’s claiming to know new details about the next iPhone.

After what happened last year, we’re not sure anyone really knows what Apple has planned for its smartphone line. But iLounge is reporting that it has learned some interesting information regarding the iPhone 5 from a “repeatedly reliable source…”

Up to this point, all of the reports and evidence we’ve seen on the iPhone 5 have suggested that the handset will feature an aluminum back with a thinner, tapered profile. But iLounge is hearing different:

“Despite the well-established “aluminum-back iPhone 5″ rumors that have continued to circulate since the iPhone 4 was released, Apple is nonetheless continuing to experiment with glass and ceramic rear shells for a future iPhone model. The upshot is that the new design would look like the iPhone 4, but thinner, thanks to Corning’s stronger Gorilla Glass 2 and further reduction of internal components.”

The site goes on to say that its source also noted that a larger screen is still in the plans for the next iPhone, and, as we’ve heard in previous reports, Apple is looking to phase out its 30-pin Dock Connector in the near future.

It’s worth noting that iLounge posted a number of claims earlier this year regarding the iPad 3. And so far, they all seem to be materializing. So we have no reason to believe this report is off.

This means that the next iPhone could very well sport the same front and back glass panels that customers have been complaining about since the iPhone 4 debuted. Keep in mind, however, that Apple has been heavily experimenting with glass for years now. So we doubt we’d see glass casing again without significant improvements.

App Store 25 billionth app download winner announced

Where’s My Water? How about “where’s my $10,000 iTunes Gift Card?” That’s likely what a fortunate person from Qingdao, China is thinking after being revealed as the winner of Apple’s App Store Countdown to 25 Billion Apps.

Winner Chunli Fu’s perfect timing when downloading Where’s My Water? Free yielded a virtual goldmine by App Store standards. Something tells me they’ll have no problem purchasing the $0.99 version of Where’s My Water? now…

“We’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.”

This isn’t the first time that Apple has paid out big money in the form of iTunes Gift Cards. Back in January of last year, a woman hung up on a call informing her that she was the App Store’s 10 billionth app giveaway winner.

Eventually that was all straightened out, and she got her hands on the prize. In that case, the downloaded app was non other than Paper Glider, and guess what; that was free too.

gets up close with iPad 3 parts [Video]

The entire tech world let out a sigh of relief last week when reports that Apple had sent out invites to a March 7th media event surfaced. Finally, after months of rumors and speculation, we’ll get to see Apple’s new tablet.

Can’t wait that long to see what the iPad 3 looks like? You’re in luck. The folks over at MIC gadget have gotten their hands on a number of iPad 3 parts, including its rear shell and front glass, and have put them all on video for your viewing pleasure…

The components in the clip fall in line with dozens of previous reports that the new iPad will be a bit thicker than its predecessor, but will otherwise look extremely familiar. Although iPad 2 cases aren’t expected to fit the new tablet, it appears that smart covers will work just fine.

It’s also worth noting that MIC gadget believes that the next iPad will feature Siri. We’ve heard a few whispers that Apple will be incorporating the digital assistant into the new slate, but have yet to see much evidence of that.
