Steve Jobs in Carbonite iPhone Case Will Raise Your Midichlorian Count

When Star Wars and Apple collide, you know you’ve got an awesome product on your hands. If you recall The Empire Strikes Back, you’ll remember Han Solo frozen inside a carbonite slab.

The Steve Jobs in Carbonite iPhone case by Society6 replaces Han Solo with Apple’s very own Steve Jobs. With this iPhone case, you can have Mr. Jobs with you at all times on the back of your iPhone 4. Just be sure to not let Lord Vader know you’ve stolen his prisoner…
“Protect for your iPhone with a one-piece, impact resistant, flexible plastic hard case featuring an extremely slim profile. Simply snap the case onto your iPhone for solid protection and direct access to all device features.”

This case will run you $35.00 on the Society6 website. There are also skins ($15.00), art prints ($35.00), and even a hoodie and t-shirt.

You better hurry if you want really want Steve Jobs in Carbonite. I can foresee the Apple and LucasArts lawyers coming after Society6 with lightsabers swinging.

What do you think of this geeky iPhone case? Remember, buying one won’t ensure that Princess Leia confesses her love to you.

iPhone 6 to Employ p-Si LCD Screens From Sharp

Who’s sick and tired of all of the iPhone 5 news, and is ready for the iPhone 6 rumors to begin heating up?

I knew you all were a group of forward thinking chaps!

Apple Insider is reporting that Apple will take a next generation leap forward by implementing new p-Si LCD screen technology in the iPhone 6.

According to the rumors, the LCD screens should start rolling off the assembly line in early 2012…
The p-Si stands for Poly-Silicon, in this case Low-Temperature Poly-Silicon. Per Toshiba, the world’s first supplier of large screen p-Si LCD panels:
A p-Si LCD panel answers a variety of needs, such as lower profile design, reduced weight and lower power consumption and allows for notebook PCs that are more comfortable and convenient to use.

Their site goes on to list the following advantages of p-Si technology over that of traditional LCD’s. These include:
  • Increased image quality
  • Enhanced durability
  • Lower profile and lighter weight
  • Lower power consumption
Those seem like some no-brainer benefits, especially for mobile devices. It could mean that we will see a tougher, thinner iPhone with greater battery life, and improved image quality on-screen.

Perhaps the main caveat at this point in the game, would be price, but we’ve heard rumblings about how good a bunch of negotiators the folks at Apple are. No doubt they’ll be able to keep prices low on the tech by buying up a huge supply.

Currently Apple is employing IPS technology in the majority of its products, including the iPhone and the iPad. Competitors on the Android platform have steered towards AMOLED technology which, to be honest, looks very nice under the right conditions.

It’ll be interesting to see if these rumors pan out, and how the next generation iPhone’s screen technology will stack up against the rapidly growing competition.

What do you think about these rumors?

Leaked Photos of iPhone 4S, Could Have Bigger Screen

As we get closer to WWDC this year, expect next generation iPhone 5 rumors to really pick up (as if they haven’t already). Apple’s annual developers conference is set for June 6th and promises to unveil iOS 5 and hopefully provide information on the next iPhone.

Although there has been no official announcement from Apple, there has been some interesting evidence floating around the web over the last few weeks regarding the next iPhone. The latest comes from MIC Gadget, who posted some pictures this morning of the proposed iPhone 4S

The gadget site doesn’t offer any explanation as to how the photos were obtained, nor do they appear to be very confident that they’re real. However, if you look back at recent reports regarding the iPhone 5, these photos seem to match up with previous information.

There have been multiple rumors pointing to a similar design of the iPhone 4 for the iPhone 5(or 4S). This wouldn’t be completely out of the ordinary for Apple, as many of you recall the iPhone 3GS.

Apple recently started sending out iPhone 4-looking devices with A5 chips to app developers. Since then, we’ve seen several leaked photos of white, iPhone 4-looking devices. The snapshots posted on BGR‘s website this weekend looked exactly like a white iPhone 4, but it obviously wasn’t.

The photos posted to MIC’s page this morning match both the BGR photos and the videoreleased last week of an iPhone running a mysterious version of iOS. The pictures also seem to support the theory that the next iPhone will get a larger screen.
As you can tell by the side-by-side comparison, the “leaked” iPhone model has a slightly bigger screen than the current one. The new screen size looks to be about 3.7 inches instead of 4.

This is obviously all speculation at this point. Apple could easily be keeping the new iPhone design a complete secret. If you remember, the iPhone 4 that was found in a bar inside a 3G-like casing.

But if the prototypes are accurate, expect the next iPhone to look extremely similar to the current model, with updated hardware. I just hope that Apple wouldn’t make everyone wait until September for a “bridge” product.

What do you think?

Cydia Finally Back Online

Cydia is finally back online! Literally, after 86 hours of downtime due to Amazon’s EC2 outage, Cydia is up and running.

Cydia’s founder, saurik (aka Jay Freeman), announced the good news via Twitter. You will now be able to proceed with regular Cydia operations, such as purchasing packages, use of the Theme Center, and managing your Cydia accounts…
“After 86 hours offline, Cydia is finally back! I’m eating some celebratory cake, and am looking forward to a night with >1.5 hours of sleep!”

Now that Cydia is fully functional, be sure to thank @saurik on Twitter for all of his hard work! Long live jailbreaking!

Cydia Operating “Below Capacity,” Saurik Updates Homepage with News about Amazon EC2 Outage

Cydia’s backend has been extensively affected by Amazon’s EC2 outage. Towards the end of last week, Amazon’s popular EC2 cloud computing service went offline and affected many heavily-trafficked services across the internet.

When EC2 went under, Cydia’s store and account infrastructure went with it. Any type of account activity remained unavailable until EC2 slowly started kicking back in over the weekend.

Cydia’s creator and admin, saurik, has posted an update to Cydia’s homepage explaining the issues that Cydia has been experiencing for the past 84+ hours.
“Amazon EC2, which hosts Cydia’s internal website, has been having extreme issues for – 40 hours. This outage affects the ability to purchase paid products, the Theme Center, and Manage Account. I (saurik) have been sleeping in hour-and-a-half shifts since this outage began in order to keep a dialog open with Amazon “Premium Support” regarding this issue. Recently, enough access was recovered in order for me to modify the home page to add this message.

Unfortunately, Amazon’s status and ETAs have been confusingly vague and highly optimistic throughout the experience, causing me to be unable to make good decisions about disaster recovery choices. At this time, the latest news from Amazon AWS (as of two hours ago) was “that this will take 3-4 hours until full access is restored.” Meanwhile,

Premium Support has asked engineering to prioritize recovering Cydia’s infrastructure. (For those interested in this sort of thing: this is the same Amazon EC2 outage that has been affecting other sites like reddit and foursquare.)

I (saurik) have been sleeping in hour-and-a-half shifts since this outage began in order to keep a dialog open with Amazon “Premium Support” regarding this issue. At some point, enough access was recovered in order for me to modify the home page to add this message.

Unfortunately, Amazon’s status and ETA’s have been confusingly vague and highly optimistic throughout the experience, causing me to be unable to make good decisions and disaster recovery choices. Premium Support has managed to get my backend databases, both the Whole Package Index and payment database, online. I commend their ability to put up with someone who has gotten so little sleep as myself.

Unfortunately, Cydia is currently operating “below capacity,” and is not keeping up with user demand. I am looking into this issue currently and imagine that this will smooth out as my data is recached to RAM.”

If you’re getting a lot of “HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden” errors in Cydia, now you know why. Package upgrades and all other account-related activities are affected by this EC2 outage.

We commend saurik for giving up his sleep to make sure Cydia is operating as smoothly as it can. Hopefully this Amazon EC2 problem won’t last much longer.

Let’s show the jailbreak community some love in the comments below!

UPDATE: It appears that Cydia is finally back online and working smoothly. A huge thanks to saurik for his dedication.

ipswDownloader Makes Downloading iOS Firmware Easy

If you’ve jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone, iPod, or iPad before you’re probably used to the usual procedure. You usually have to download the iOS IPSW firmware file in order to continue with the jailbreaking of your iDevice.

ipswDownloader by developer Vitaly Parovishnik makes this process a whole lot easier. The program not only downloads the IPSW firmware file for you, but also displays whether the firmware you’ve selected can be jailbroken and unlocked, along with the size of the IPSW and the tools needed to jailbreak the firmware.

This is a must-have application for all of our readers that are new to the jailbreak/unlock scene, and also for those of you that consider yourself iPhone experts. For upgrading to the newest jailbreak, this is definitely a nice utility to have at your fingertips.

Sadly, ipswDownloader is only available for Mac OS XYou can download the app for free here.
Let us know how you like ipswDownloader in the comments!

Is This What the iPhone 5 Will Look Like?

A new report from This is my next reveals some interesting rumors about the iPhone 5. According to Joshua Topolsky (the former editor-in-chief of Engadget), the iPhone 5 will in fact be a significant redesign of the current iPhone 4.

Topolsky doesn’t cite specific sources, but he claims that the iPhone 5 will have a design very similar to that of the fourth-generation iPod touch. Engadget originally said that the iPhone 5 would be a major evolution of the iPhone 4, and this report from This is my nextcorroborates that claim.

This is my next produced the above mockup to visualize what Topolsky and others are hearing about the iPhone 5. The image is not a factual representation, but an educated guess based on what has been divulged to Topolsky and team.

Overall, the design of the next iPhone is supposed to resemble a “teardrop” shape, similar to that of the MacBook Air. The device will be thinner with a 3.7 inch screen and look “more like the iPod touch than the iPhone 4.”

The prototypes that Apple is supposedly testing have a redesigned home button with gesture integration. We’ve already heard a rumor that the next iPhone will not have a home button, but this hybrid solution makes more sense.
“In a sketch supplied to us by a source (on which the image above is based), the home button is doing double duty as a gesture area; this falls in line with testing we’ve seen for gestures on the iPad, and our sources say that gestures are definitely coming in a future version of iOS. The home button will likely be enlarged, but not scrapped altogether.”

This is my next claims that the iPhone 5′s screen will “occupy the entire (or near to it) front of the phone, meaning almost no bezel.” An edge-to-edge screen has also been reported from another source, so This is my next’s claim doesn’t totally come out of nowhere.

If the screen size does increase, Topolsky points out that Apple could stay within the “retina display” expectations by keeping the resolution to 312dpi.

Topolsky’s report also makes some claims about NFC and inductive charging, but those statements are based out of total speculation.
“While the art we’ve seen shows some form of inductive or touch charging, our sources can’t confirm whether or not Apple’s working on its own version of cable-free juicing. There’s also a “swipe area” shown in the drawing which appears to be on the bottom and / or top of the device — that could very well be an NFC point, but that’s pure speculation on our part.”

This is my next clarifies that this report is not based off confirmed fact,
“Now, keep in mind that this info isn’t fact — we’re getting lots of threads from lots of places and trying to make sense of the noise. The versions of devices our sources are seeing could be design prototypes and not production-ready phones. Still, there are strong indications that Apple will surprise a public that’s expecting a bump more along the lines of the 3G to 3GS — and this is some insight into where those designs might be headed.”

The team at This is my next has a good track record, and Joshua Topolsky isn’t one to just blow smoke. Although this information could very well be based off prototype units that never see the light of day, it’s interesting to see the possibilities that exist for the iPhone 5.

The most intriguing part of this report is the gesture-sensitive home button. It seems like a pretty original idea, and it wouldn’t be past Apple to morph the current home button into a more touch-interactive experience. Altering the home button with gestures could be part of the plan to abandon the home button entirely in a future generation of the iPhone.

What do you think? Do you think we’ll see this design and feature set in the iPhone 5?

The First White iPhone 4 Has Been Sold in US!

While even iDB growing tired of the constant white iPhone 4 rumors, this little tidbit was definitely worth reporting. So far sources within AT&T and Verizon have yet to see any evidence of a white iPhone 4 April launch.

Other than the mysterious order page that showed up on a website last week, we really haven’t seen any concrete evidence that the phone even exists. Well it looks like earlier today, some real proof started materializing…

9to5Mac posted a supposed company memo this morning, from a BelCompany employee. The Netherlands retailer sells phones for multiple carriers (much like an agent location in the states) and is claiming that T-Mobile will have exclusivity on the iPhone, in the Netherlands at least, when it launches later this month.

Apparently the blog was asked to take the photo of the memo down, but this is their translation of what it said:
This Wednesday, all retail stores will receive the white T-Mobile iPhone 4 16 GB. Also, a limited number of retail stores will receive one single white iPhone 4 32 GB. New supplies will be scare/very limited. If the supply is exhausted/sold out, inform the customer that new deliveries are expected in 4 to 5 weeks time.

That’s not all, stores across Europe have been reporting that they have been receiving shipments from Apple in boxes marked “Do not open until April 27th.” Could we finally have an official launch date for the mythical phone?

If you’re still skeptical at this point, you might want to check out these pictures Engadgetposted this afternoon of an actual white iPhone 4 and its retail box. Apparently a Vodafone customer was able to purchase this white iPhone 4 when the retailer’s POS (Point of Sale) system recognized the item as a black model. Obviously it was a mistake and employees have since been instructed not to sale anymore until next week.
9to5Mac points out an interesting fact in the uploaded white iphone 4 pictures. Notice the black strip above the speaker. That is the proximity sensor, its what turns your screen off when your cheek is close to the screen to avoid pressing buttons.

On the black model it’s barely noticeable, but on the white model it seems to really stick out. They speculate that this might have been one of the major obstacles Apple had to deal with during the production process.

Whatever the case, it appears we finally have some real proof that we’ll see a white iPhone 4 in the near future. It’s been quite a roller coaster since the device mysteriously disappeared from Apple’s order page last summer.

Are you going to be getting a white iPhone 4?

iPhone Won’t Have 4G Until At Least 2012

Speculation has been that Apple could possibly introduce an LTE/4G iPhone in the coming year. Some even thought that Apple pushed back the iPhone 5′s announcement to wait for LTE saturation in the U.S.

Will we see an iPhone 4G this September? According to both Apple and the LTE industry, it doesn’t look hopeful…

The chips needed to equip the iPhone with 4G/LTE capability don’t exist yet. And they won’t exist until at least early 2012.

Forbes reports,
“Rumor has it the next-generation iPhone won’t arrive until September. If so, it won’t offer the crazy fast data speeds promised by next-generation 4G wireless networks.

That’s because access to the turbo-charged networks that make Verizon’s Thunderbolt handset crazy fast require a combination of chips Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said Wednesday Apple won’t use.”

Apple has previously shown interest in LTE, but Apple’s own Tim Cook made no bones about Apple’s current stance on LTE in yesterday’s earnings call.

Apple’s COO, Tim Cook,
“The first generation of LTE chip-sets force a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those we are just not willing to make.”

The chipset industry and U.S. network infrastructure just can’t handle iPhone-level saturation when it comes to LTE. 4G devices in the U.S. market like the Verizon Thunderbolt rely on two chips to deliver lighting fast speeds and communication between Verizon’s 4G and 3G signals.

Apple doesn’t like the design compromises that would need to be made to accommodate two chips for 4G in the next iPhone. And the type of chips that would appease Apple won’t be available to the market until at least next year.
“Those chips won’t appear in handsets until next year, says Will Strauss, president of wireless chip tracker Forward Concepts. “They’re right that there’s nothing out there that fits the bill, and likely nothing will until the fourth quarter of this year,” Strauss says when asked about Cook’s remarks.”

Don’t hold your breath for an iPhone 4G this fall. The sixth generation iPhone will probably be LTE-capable, but September’s device will most likely run on good old 3G.

What do you think? Is Apple just blowing smoke? Will we be surprised with an iPhone 4G this year?

Apple Testing “iPhone 4S” With Developers, Device Will Have A5 Chip for Enhanced Gaming

Apple has already started testing prototype units of the next generation iPhone with “select” developers. iDB already heard that the next iPhone will most likely sport Apple’s powerful A5 processor, and 9to5Mac is reporting that the next iPhone will indeed boast the A5 chip.

The iPad 2 uses Apple’s A5 processor, and Apple is bringing the A5 to the iPhone in order to improve gaming performance. Big-name gaming companies are already testing an A5-equipped iPhone “4S” to get ready for the new device’s launch.

9to5Mac discovered that the A5 chip is coming by looking inside the iOS 4 SDK, and they’ve heard that Apple will market the speedy processor to the gaming community. The device that Apple is sending to select develepors is cleverly named the iPhone “4S,”
“The person who chose to share this information with us calls it the ‘iPhone 4S’, though the device itself only has typical Apple prototype nomenclature.  He also shared that the device spends its evenings in a safe in the company’s offices.”

To be clear: these prototype iPhone 4S devices are not necessarily the next-generation iPhone. These phones are simply prototype units for developers to get ready for the new phone, rumored to be launching in September.”

9to5Mac found the A5 information inside the SDK of the iOS version running on the prototype iPhone “4s” device. These devices run a version of iOS that supports the iPhone’s next-gen hardware.

Gaming has always been a huge market in the App Store. iOS 5 will most likely focus more heavily on gaming, and hopefully Apple will do something more with Game Center. It’s nice to see that the next iPhone will get a big step up in performance.

Do you think that the A5 chip will affect the next iPhone’s battery life? What about the name “iPhone 4s?”

Hopefully Apple can come up with something better than that.
