Tweaks: ‘Deck’ is now available on Cydia

Yes erveryone, it’s finally here: the highly anticipated centralized Action-Bar for the SpringBoard called Deck. We’ve had countless people asking us when Deck would be released, and we’re happy to finally be able to say: now.
Be sure to check that out along with #iDownloadblog video walkthrough of the tweak above.
Deck is available right now on Cydia’s ModMyi repo for $1.99. What do you think about it?

Saurik explains why Cydia must reload packages

Have you ever wondered why Cydia has to perform the ‘loading packages’ step every time you open it up? Well reddit user indochris609 did, and decided to take his question to the reddit jailbreak forum.
Dozens of users responded to the query, including Cydia’s creator, Saurik. And as usual, the hacker/developer’s explanation of the topic at hand is both interesting and informative…

“So, the “Reloading Data” step is something that can be made faster (and often is: new releases of Cydia often improve the performance of Reloading Data, and it is drastically improved when Apple releases new devices; on the new A5 CPU that step is almost pleasant).

However, the part where it is downloading packages from third party servers is a different story: Cydia, unlike the App Store (or almost any similar service), stores the entire package catalog locally. This is why it can (quite quickly, in fact) render an insanely long table with all packages in it that you can just fling your way through, while the App Store shows you 25 packages at a time with a slow “load more” button.

However, this means that it actually has to keep packages locally, and has to keep their records up to date. From a “cold start”, downloading the package catalog is something like three megabytes, compressed (totaled from BigBoss, ModMyi, and ZodTTD).”

Saurik goes on to explain that Cydia must download the package catalog on every load to ensure that users will automatically see all of the latest uploaded packages and updates. There is, however, a 15 minute window after Cydia performs this task where it won’t automatically download the catalog upon launch.
Saurik’s entire response to the aforementioned question is worth reading if you have the time. It’ll remind you why he’s one of the most recognized figures in the jailbreak community, and why Cydia is still the number one store for jailbreakers.

iTweak: an upcoming alternative to Cydia

Since the jailbreak community formed sometime in late 2007, we’ve seen a number of “App Store alternatives.” I can think of Icy, Cydia, Rock Your iPhone, and Installer just off the top of our head.
Now it looks like we could soon be adding another option into the mix: iTweak. The new store describes itself as a ‘Cydia alternative’ where jailbreakers will be available to find all of their favorite tweaks, themes and utilities…

iTweakStore.com just went live with a ‘Coming Soon’ banner, and the following message:

“Welcome to iTweak! iTweak is one of the best places to get all of your Tweaks, Themes, Utilities and more on your jailbroken iPhone, iPod touch and iPad! We serve as an alternative to Cydia, and the Apple App Store.”

We’ve seen a number of promising Cydia challengers over the years that never managed to materialize, so for now we’re remaining skeptical. But if these guys can really deliver on their claims of a “fast, powerful, and easy to use” jailbreak store, we’re all for it.
There doesn’t seem to be any word on when iTweak will be open for business, but as always we’ll be sure to keep you up to date as the story develops.
What do you think of iTweak so far? Do we really need a Cydia alternative?

Cydia Was Installed on 953,232 Devices Over the Weekend

Earlier today, Chronic Dev Team was reporting that Absinthe, the first iPhone 4S-compatible jailbreaking utility, was downloaded more than 1 million times last Friday. That’s huge.

And the Dev Team seems to back up that theory with a new blog post entitled “Welcome new A5 jailbreakers!” The post breaks down how many people installed Cydia over the weekend, and on what devices…
“Here’s a quick breakdown of how many A5 owners have jailbroken their devices since Friday morning. The numbers as of Monday afternoon are:

  • 491,325 new iPhone 4S devices
  • 308,967 new iPad 2 devices
  • 152,940 previously jailbroken (at 4.x) iPad 2 devices
Total: 953,232 new A5 jailbreaks in a little over 3 days.

The reason these numbers can be so precise is that one of the housekeeping activities that happens when you launch Cydia is a query to @saurik’s server for the list of available SHSH blobs. (Even if you have none on file, the query is still made).”

So around 800,000 devices were jailbroken this weekend for the first time. That’s pretty cool.

MobileSubstrate Updated to Fix Cydia Tweak Crashes on iOS 5.0.1 Untether

Jay Freeman (known as saurik) has pushed an update for MobileSubstrate that addresses the crashing of jailbreak tweaks from Cydia on the iOS 5.0.1 untether. Coincidentally,RedSn0w was updated this morning with a fix for MobileSubstrate crash errors as well.
Users that are jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1 can install version 0.9.3955 of MobileSubstrate now in Cydia to fix tweak crashes. Another huge perk is that MobileSubstrate no longer requires that you reboot iOS every time you install or upgrade the package.
Long-time jailbreakers know the pain of having to reboot your iOS device every time MobileSubstrate installs or upgrades itself. That is no longer the case thanks to this new version.
Users have reported that certain Cydia packages crash on the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak, so this MobileSubstrate update should fix the issue. Saurik has also noted that Substrate is now compatible with the idea of a “semi-tethered” jailbreak, indicating the possibility of an easier jailbreaking process in the future.

Cydia v1.1.3 Updated

An update of Cydia that brings Cydia to version 1.1.3. As no official Cydia 1.1.3 changelog was released to the public we can only share small tid-bits of information floating around the internet about the update. Such as in this Cydia 1.1.3 update you can expect some bug fixes, security improvements and also general improvements to the overall responsiveness (stability) of Cydia. One major thing we can conclude, however, is that Cydia was updated to version 1.1.3 to provide support for the Corona 5.0.1 Untether Jailbreak.
If you have not updated to Cydia 1.1.3 already you will need to simply go into the Changes tab andrefresh your sources. Once you do this you will notice an essential upgrade notification will popup where you can update Cydia to version 1.1.3.

Lastest updated:-
If you’ve been trying to use Cydia for the last day, you might have noticed that it is slow, sluggish, or even unresponsive. Before you start thinking that your iPhone may be the cause of the problem, relax and don’t freak out, because it’s not.
Since the release of the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak yesterday, potentially hundreds of thousands of people have been jailbreaking, launching, and refreshing Cydia sources in the same short period of time, resulting in server overloads for many repos…
Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do. The only solution is to wait for things to calm down. I suspect that in a day or two, most jailbreakers will have already installed the untether, and things will start going back to normal.
So be patient! In the meantime, you may want to try using Cydia late at night when there is less online activity.

"Spire" tweak: A Legal Port of "Siri" Into Cydia on iPhone4/iPodTouch

As previous post about "i4Siri" Legal Siri port on iPhone 4 imminent [Video] told you that some hackers working on "i4Siri" for Legal Siri port to iPhone4.
But... now Hackers Chpwn and Ryan Petrich have released a new Cydia tweak that can legally install Siri to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running the iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1 firmware. This legal Siri port is called "Spire" and provides a stable way of installing Siri to older models of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (unlike the H1Siri Cydia tweak, which was unstable and buggy). Although the Spire Cydia tweak is a complete port of Siri for older models of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, access to an iPhone 4S is still required. This is because Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, thus you need to use a SiriProxy Fork, where you can setup a proxy using your own iPhone 4S (or a friends) to insert the needed information fairly easily.

Chpwn explains on his blog that the reason the Spire Cydia tweak is a legal port of Siri is because Spire uses a different method to obtain the necessary files for Siri (they are downloaded directly from Apple). If you would like to download and install Spire to your iPhone 4iPhone 3GSiPod Touch 4G,iPod Touch 3G or first generation iPad then simply navigate to Cydia and find Spire in the Changes tab.
Note: The Spire Cydia tweak uses about 100 MB of data, so please connect to Wi-Fi beforeinstalling.

Update #1: Learn how to download and install the Spire Cydia tweak to your older iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad now on ijailbreak.com. Click here to follow this guide.
Update #2: As soon as free Siri Proxy Hosts become available we will list them on our official Siri Proxy Host List.

Cydia “Featured” Page Gets a Makeover

If you go to Cydia today and visit the “Featured” section, you’re going to see some nice changes. The page now lists some sponsored apps, and also Featured Extensions and Tweaks that are worth a look.
Bringing some much needed organization to Cydia, this Featured Extensions and Tweaks section is probably the most interesting part of this makeover…
With so many packages available in Cydia, it’s sometimes hard to go through all that’s available. The sheer volume of apps and tweaks in Cydia and the way it’s all organized makes it hard to find new, worthy apps.
This new sections aims at weeding out the fluff to focus on the best of the best. Divided into several categories, you get a selection of hand picked and highly recommended jailbreak tweaks.
UPDATE: Saurik’s assistant tells iDB this new feature was pushed yesterday.
What do you think of the new changes to Cydia? Sound Great?

Get Your Very Own Cydia “Reloading Data” Shirt

Jay ‘saurik‘ Freeman, the creator of Cydia, is known for wearing a black t-shirt wherever he goes that says “Reloading Data.” Jailbreakers will recognize these two words because that’s the message that gets displayed in Cydia all of the time when content is loading.
Every time Freeman is spotted in public, like at JailbreakCon, readers always ask this one question: “Where can I get one of those Cydia shirts?
Here is the good news for you…
Graphic artist Amnesiaco has re-created Freeman’s infamous t-shirt and made it available for purchase on RedBubble. The t-shirt looks exactly like the one worn by Freeman himself, with the “Reloading Data” message displayed proudly on the chest.
And guess what? Amnesiaco’s creation actually comes in t-shirt, v-neck t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, “girly fitted” t-shirt, and even hoodie form! The design is also available in a range of colors, although black is obviously the preferred choice. You can even get the “Reloading Data” text displayed on the back or front of the shirt as well.
This is an awesome shirt to own if you’re a jailbreak enthusiast. Are you going to buy one of these “Reloading Data” shirts?

Saurik, the Creator of Cydia, Files Lawsuit to Win Cydia.com Domain

Jay Freeman, better known as Saurik, has filled a lawsuit in the hopes of obtaining rights to the Cydia.com domain name. Saurik owns Saurikit LLC, and he is filing his suit based on trademark infringement.
The owners of Cydia.com have refused to give Saurik rights to the domain in the past, and he proposes a viable complaint that users will be confused by the domain if it does not point to the infamous jailbreak store he created known as Cydia.
DomainNameWire reports:
“Earlier this year it filed a UDRP to get Cydia.com. The UDRP panel ruled against Saurikit, noting that the domain name was registered six years before Saurikit started using the name Cydia.
The company’s in rem lawsuit against the Cydia.com domain name alleges that the owner of the domain name changed the content of the page from a parked page to one about Apple products after it contacted him.”
Jay Freeman’s LLC is requesting that the domain be transferred from the current registrar into Saurikit’s possession, and he is also requesting damages for legal fees.
A PDF of Saurikit’s lawsuit is available here.

The Infamous GeoHot Partying with Jailbreak Royalty at Defcon

Justin Williams tweeted the above picture from p0sixninja’s hotel room last night. The group was enjoying a little R&R after a heavy day of hacking at this year’s Defcon convention. The annual event highlights new exploits and popular topics in the security community.

If you’ve been jailbreaking for a while, chances are you’ll recognize a few people in the picture above. Instantly identifiable are Saurik, the mastermind behind Cydia, and the original iPhone hacker GeoHot…

Then there’s Chronic Dev team member p0sixninja, aka Joshua Hill, and Justin “Jaywalker” Williams sporting the GreenPois0n t-shirts. And if that’s not enough star power, nitoTV(known for his work on the Apple TV) is in there too.

It’s crazy to think about the effects that these guys have had on the jailbreak scene. If nothing else, this epic photograph makes you stand back and think, “Damn, there sure are a lot of rock stars in that room. I wonder what they’re talking about.”
