Samsung Galaxy Note is so much better than the iPhone [Video]

Yes, the Samsung Galaxy Note is so much better than the iPhone! Because, you know, you can crop your head and stitch it on a basketball player’s head, all that with a very handy stylus.

Jailbroken iPad 2 iOS 5.0.1 [Updated]

A couple days ago, pod2g shared with us the video of a jailbroken iPhone 4S. What could be considered as a tease is actually a way to keep us updated about the progress of the various teams working on the jailbreak.

Today, pod2g teased us a little more by posting the image of a jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 on his blog…
The photo comes with a few words:
No more to say !

What is this supposed to mean? That the jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is nearing completion? We’ve heard the same encouraging message for a couple weeks now, so let’s not get our hopes up quite yet.
So far, only older devices running iOS 5.0.1 can be jailbroken, using PwnageTool,RedSn0w, or even Sn0wBreeze. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 sport Apple’s A5 chip which is currently immune to exploits used for the latest untethered jailbreak. This is something that hopefully won’t last long.

UPDATE: Looks like pod2g removed the image and post from his blog. We’re not sure what it means but if I had to take a guess I’d say other jailbreak hackers such as MuscleNerd kindly asked him not to show off any jailbreak until it’s ready. I could be wrong though. What’s your guess?

Jailbroken iPhone 4S [Video]

A few days ago we told you that pod2g and his fellow hackers were getting close to completing an untethered jailbreak for A5 devices. This includes both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S.
While we still don’t have an exact release date, pod2g did give us something to wet our appetites. The hacker has just posted a video to his blog of an untethered jailbreak running on Apple’s latest handset…

The video was shot by Dustin Howett, an iOS developer and member of the Chronic Dev Team. As you can see, he demonstrates a complete, untethered jailbreak on his iPhone 4S.
Pod2g notes on his blog that there is “only a few to wait now,” so we assume that we are getting extremely close to an A5 jailbreak release. Make sure to keep checking back with iDB, we’ll let you know as soon as it drops.

Cruise Ship Sinking In Italy

The 984-foot-long cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground on the island of Giglio, Italy, killing at least three people. More than 4,000 people have been evacuated, but 50 are still missing. The night photos remind everyone of the sinking Titanic.
The accident didn't involve an iceberg, but it sounds pretty similar: passengers heard a loud crash sound during dinner. At first, the captain told them that the ship had an electrical problem but the evacuation started almost immediately after that, as they were ordered to put on their life jackets and walk to their emergency rafts.
The situation worsened quickly. Officials said the evacuation became extremely difficult as the ship sunk and the inclination increased dramatically. According to Giuseppe Linardi—prefect of the city of Grosseto, in the Tuscany region—many panicking passengers jumped into the sea as the Costa Concordia started to quickly lean to the side. About 150 of those have already been rescued.
Talking to local media, a passenger described the scene: "it was a nightmare, if felt like the Titanic, we thought we were going to die [...] people shouting and kids crying in the middle of the most absolute darkness."

Some passengers said the evacuation was really slow, taking an hour and a half between the impact and the time they left the ship. They pointed out that some of the crew members told them that the captain knew the situation was grave, but he didn't act accordingly.
4,179 people have been accounted, 14 of them injured. There were a total of 4,229 registered passengers and crew members in the ship, which was cruising through the Mediterranean. According to the manufacturer, the Costa Concordia can hold 3,780 passengers and 1,100 crew members. The city prefect says they are searching frantically for the missing people.

Update: The ship's captain—who left the ship two hours after the accident—has been arrested by the Italian police under charges of involuntary manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship. According to Grosseto's chief prosecutor, Francesco Verusio, "the captain approximated Giglio clumsily, hitting a rock on its left side, making the ship to lean, which caused a large amount of water to enter the hull in just two or three minutes."

iPhone SJ Concept In Action [Video]

Last week,as one of my post about designer Antonio De Rosa’s next-generation iPhone concept/tribute to Steve Jobs. The iPhone SJ looks like something Jony Ive could have cooked up himself in the basements of Cupertino, and now there’s a video of the concept for our viewing enjoyment.

"Liquipel" Waterproofs your iPhone without a Case

To most people, iPhones and iPads are fairly expensive. That’s why we all put cases and screen protectors on our devices — to keep them safe from drops and other accidents. But how do we protect our gadgets from water damage?
Well, there’s a handful of case options that claim to make your iPhone waterproof, but they’re either bulky or extremely unattractive (see DryCase). Liquipel, however, is trying to change that with its new invisible waterproof coating…
TheNextWeb says Liquipel’s latest invention, a microscopic coating that protects electronics from water damage, could change the world of electronics forever. And we might have to agree. Watch.

Although the company won’t divulge any specific details about what it is or what it’s made of, it describes the product as an invisible coating that bonds to your device at the molecular level (inside and out) to repel water.
Don’t get too excited though. Liquipel’s product isn’t available at your local Best Buy/eBay. You actually have to send your iPhone (or other handset) into the company along with $59 to have them apply it, and we’re not sure the average person is going to be willing to that.
But the mere fact that the technology exists is still incredible. Here’s hoping manufacturers eventually pick up on this and start applying Liquipel to their products before they ship them.
What do you think?

iPad2 survives fall from ‘Space’ with G-Form case

Sure, there are things like “terminal velocity” and the definition of “space” that are used a little loosely here, but it is still all kinds of awesome. The conventional definition of the beginning of space is 100 km above sea level, which is 328,084 feet.  This is ‘just 100,000′ feet.
As a G-Form Extreme Sleeve owner with an abusive toddler, Is can attest that ours has survived about 100,000 feet of drop-age, albeit in 3-foot increments. Amazing right?

2012NewYear Fireworks on World’s Tallest Building

As if being the tallest building in the world isn't already impressive enough, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai put on one of the most amazing fireworks displays I've ever seen to ring in the new year.
Instead of just surrounding the building with giant colorful explosions, the Burj Khalifa itself was turned into a 2,723 foot tall launch pad. And it packed enough firepower for a five and a half minute display of pure eye candy that's worth watching all the way through.
Seriously, even if you had an amazing evening celebrating the arrival of 2012, I guarantee it was nothing like this.

Watch "Siri" Play the Piano [Video]

Since Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S back in October sporting the new Siri feature, the digital assistant has been the talk of the internet. We’ve seen Siri do everything from starting a car to Controls entire room.
So what will the voice-controlled assistant take on next? Yamaha has the answer to that: play the piano. Folks at the world renowned electronics and instruments company have taught Siri to play the piano. Well, sort of…

“Take a standard MIDI songfile and convert it to an audio file (while maintaing the MIDI data). The songfile is then sent wirelessly via WiFi to an Apple Airport Express (which is mounted underneath a Yamaha Disklavier reproducing piano. The audio output of the Airport Express is then connected to the analog MIDI inputs of the Disklavier, using a standard cable.

Then, you simply ask Siri to play your favorite song from your iTunes library, and Siri responds immediately, by making the Disklavier’s keys and pedal move up and down, recreating the performance, including full orchestration.

Interested in the technology behind the Siri-player piano? Jim Dalrymple from The Loop breaks it down for us:

So there’s actually no hacking going on like with other Siri proxy projects. Most of the trickery is done with hardware here. And out of all of the things we’ve seen Siri do over the past couple of months, this has to be one of the coolest.
What do you think?

The World’s Largest 3D Street Art

The project was made by street artists 3D Joe & Max for Reebok's CrossFit (there's an outdoor gym!) and is located in London's West India Quays, Canary Wharf. It's officially the world's larget 3D street art (as measured by Guinness World Record) dialing in at 12,490 square feet. The whole installation took over 7 days to complete and the effect is shocking. You feel like you're being swallowed by the mouths of hell.

Speakers Make Album Art By Bumping the Bass Filled with Paint

The guys behind Instrumenti, Shipsi and Reynsi, cooked up a unique way to create album art: let the songs do the talking. They poured paint into speakers and let the music splash onto the canvas to come up with some Jacksonian Pollockian-type art.

How LockCircle’s Camera Body Cap Is Made (And that why it Cost so Expensive)

We've shown you the ridiculously awesome and expensive LockCircle Camera Body Cap. It's good if you, uh, I don't know, go to dangerous places? Here's how it's made. (Cue: Ohhh, that's why it's a $100) Rm300++
It's 79 different steps to make this body cap! I'm not even sure what I should think. Machined from solid billett aluminum actually sounds reasonable (and very cool). But what the hell is hardener porosity occlusion treatment? Thats like at least one brain melting adjective too much. Either way, watching the robot carving the piece and listening to the ominous soundtrack pumping the video already has me pulling out my credit card. Sound Cool right?

What Traveling Around the World Looks Like in 1 Minute (Hint: Awesome)

MOVE from Rick Mereki on Vimeo.

EAT from Rick Mereki on Vimeo.

LEARN from Rick Mereki on Vimeo.

Rick, Tim and Andrew, three ordinary guys, decided to take a trip of a lifetime: 11 countries in 44 days. 18 flights and 38,000 miles later they have three 1-minute videos showing what life is like around the world.
They recorded everything off two cameras and ended up with over a terabyte of footage which they cut, mixed and matched into an awesomely seamless blend of every notable place they've been.
They broke down their trip into three parts: Move, which shows them walking around, Eat, which shows the delectable food they ate, and Learn, which shows all the amazing things they did.
Three movies. One minute a pop. Watch them all. I dare you not to smile (and also dare you not to quit your job and blow all your savings on this type of trip).
